Fire up the fireplace

In the living room there is a modern clean-burning fireplace with a large heating capacity. Avoid burning too much and for too long, and avoid it getting too hot. Only firewood must be used in the price (NO BRICKS). There are two handles under the fireplace door. Both should normally be pulled out position. To reduce firing, you can first press the left one, and maybe also the right one.

When lighting a cold fireplace, it can be advantageous to leave the fireplace door a bit open - and the outer door of the cabin - slightly ajar for a while. It can help when you start the fire in the fireplace, it gives more oxygen.

Pay close attention, because after the combustion is well under way, the fireplace door must be closed. This will provide the best possible combustion and the best possible energy utilization of the wood. A closed fireplace also provides better combustion and faster heating.

How to make the fire: Make a small plinth from three small logs at the bottom of the combustion chamber. Then place a block at the front and one at the back, so that you can create a heat tunnel by laying a slightly wider one on top, possibly at an angle.

Always use briquettes to light the fireplace. We have some that are made of newspaper, rolled up and embedded with kerosene. Press on the roll and spread out the leaves to get the best effect during the ignition.

When it is very cold outside in winter, it pays to keep the fireplace alive over time. After you have achieved the correct temperature, you can insert a small log every now and then for constant heat in the fireplace.

At the top of the fireplace are approximately 60 kilos of heating stones. This ensures that the heat is stored for up to 12 hours.

In the outhouse there is a supply of wood for use in the fireplace in the living room and the wood stove in the kitchen, and also for the outdoor fireplace.

It normally takes up to one bag of firewood per day during the cold season to heat the cabin, otherwise less.

Since there is no one present at the cabin when there are no guests, visitors takes one bag of firewood with them per day they stay at the cabin. This is how there is wood in the cabin throughout the winter.

Heating in the wood stove

The kitchen has a new and clean-burning wood stove that provides heat to the kitchen, large bedroom and loft. Do not use the wood stove for roasting, but rather use the gas stove for this purpose. You can make hot water the fastest and easiest by using the water heater on the kitchen counter.

When lighting a cold wood stove, you first place three smaller logs in the bottom. preferably so that it becomes a flat surface. Then place two logs on each side over the three bottom logs. Then place two kindling briquettes in the middle between the top two logs, and finally place the sixth log diagonally above the flames from the kindling. It always pays to unfold the paper on the lighters.

When the wood-burning stove is cold and it is cold inside, lighting can be done faster if the outer door is left slightly ajar, at the same time as the oven door is also left ajar. It gives more oxygen to the wood stove so that it starts up faster and heats up quickly.

Close the oven door completely when it burns well. It provides the best heating, is the most environmentally friendly and uses less wood. The oven door should never be left open after the fire is good. This also applies at night.

The gas stove

The kitchen has a good gas stove for cooking. It must never be used for heating the room.

To light a flare, the black switch must be turned to the left, while pressing it in. When the flare burns, release the button slowly and release it.

You will then hear the spark ignite and the gas burn on the selected burner. If it does not light, it may be that the gas is not connected. See separate information on gas connection.

It is possible that you have to try several times before the flare ignites. Allow a few minutes between each attempt.

Gas refrigerator

The gas refrigerator is only used in the warm season. At other times of the year, we use the food cellar.

To start the gas refrigerator, the blue gas tap on the kitchen wall must be in a vertical position to open the gas.

On the refrigerator itself there are two white buttons. The left is held for 30 to 60 seconds to release gas into the stroke.

Then press and hold the other button to spark. When the throttle needle moves to the right, release the buttons.

Turn off the blue gas tap to close the refrigerator (to horisontal position).

Matkjeller (?)

I gulvet på kjøkkenet er det en luke ned til matkjelleren. Denne brukes som kjølerom på den kalde årstiden, fordi det gir bedre kjølig enn ved bruk av gasskjøleskapet. Kjøleskapet brukes derfor kun i den varme årstiden.

Lukk alltid gulvluken med en gang.

The sauna

In the outbuilding there is a sauna room. Fire up the sauna stove with wood to reach the desired temperature. Never use other fuels in the sauna stove. Open for drafts by pulling the ash tray out slightly from the closed position.

The sauna stove has a chamber for heating water, which can be used to mix water for showering. Half and half with hot and cold water gives the right shower temperature.

Never bring flammable liquids into the sauna, what so ever. Always be at least two people . Avoid scalding due to hot water.

Connect
the gas

Before you can use gas for the gas stove and gas refrigerator in the kitchen, a gas tank located outdoors must be connected.

The gas bottles are placed in a cupboard under the kitchen windows, outdoors. Use the key labeled "gas" hanging in the key cabinet in the hallway to unlock the padlock on the gas cabinet.

To connect the gas, lift the gas tank out of the gas cabinet. Then press down on the regulator that the gas hose is connected to, and press down on the black one with both hands until you hear a distinct 'click'. You may have to use force/gravity to get the regulator down.

Once the regulator is connected, tilt the lever at the top until you see a mark illustrating a flame. The gas is then connected. Then insert the gas tank into the gas cabinet and lock the door.

Please note that on the kitchen wall by the gas fridge there are two different gas taps that must be opened for gas to flow to the kitchen's gas cooker (red tap) and the gas fridge (blue tap). The gas taps are open when they are in the vertical position.

If it is difficult to unlock the gas vessel in winter, it may be due to condensation/ice in the padlock. Use lock spray to remove condensation and ice in the padlock. Lock spray can be found by the key cabinet in the hallway.

Do the opposite to close the taps and disconnect the gas tank.
